Normalising the process of learning for the needy, facing tough challenges.
Instilling confidence in the learner.
Instilling confidence in the learner is a way forward bringing about good achievement in the child, however young or old ,he or she may be.
All learning isn’t within the text book. The text has much smaller print and font size and the high literature even if it be for a ten year old who is in the 5 th standard , but without much exposure and familiarity to the language, that of which is sure to create a cognitive confusion. We often label children as dyslexics , with other learning disabilities, no child is unsuccessful if the focus shifts from diagnostics to the right approaches to teaching and learning. Individual, bold printed reading cards makes the child confident enough to succeed. The attempts are less painstaking and more enjoyable , bringing about the right levels of confidence.
That is a true way of reaching out to children, especially in their formative years.
All lessons then need to be planned slowly and be made progressively , from simple to complex , accomplishing one task after the other.
Both the advantaged and the disadvantaged age groups , definitely need a well graded syllabus, often repetitive in varied contexts to bring about the fluency and ease of reading the text.
Reading is a skill that is acquired through the focus of the eye, focusing from the left to the right in directionality, visual perception of word formation, auditory memory of being able to decode the letter sound relationship , to the whole perception of the entire word content within a particular referential literary context.
The method for developing the reading ability of the word content would primarily be based on carefully graded material, adding few letters to more , enabling accurate sight reading. Coordination of eye muscle movement is important and all checks are needed to determine a good sight and proper vision , observing the left to right orientation, while decoding the letter sound relationship , especially so when the sound patterns of a particular letter of the alphabet , not always the same. Phonics needs to be gradually weaned off to more directed reading ,following the contextual clues.
Moreover good memorisation, retention and recall along with the word imagery helps in bringing about the desired change in the quality of reading.
While a section of population would be happy in a naturalistic environment, with a holistic education and seeking the Whole Language Approach to Reading and Writing, the other group would be largely comfortable in moving from simple to complex, well graded ,reading materials.
Phonic method should lead to Sight perception ,enabling reading followed by writing.
One cannot rush into the syllabus , the book is but a medium of gaining knowledge, giving a directionality of what is the expectancy levels at a particular age group, prepared by senior academicians and teachers.
